Welcome to Looking Back: Stories About The Great Northern Railway

In 2004 I began searching through local resources for historical documents, stories and other information relating to the Great Northern Railway. The initial focus of my effort was the Flathead Valley in Northwest Montana. This narrow focus soon expanded to include all areas of the Great Northern system.

The stories and information presented here are the result not only of my initial and ongoing efforts, and the involvement of Chuck Hatler in recent years, but now also include the efforts of others who are contributing.

Beginning in February, 2011, 8 volunteers - Rocky's Readers - have joined the ranks to help process material for posting on this website. I would like extend a "Thank You" to these volunteers for their contributions: Donald Dandurand, Mick Moore, Scott Tanner, Patrick Slayton, Shawn Cromett, Larry Sloan, Leo Harker and Dan Bolyard. Dan also has posted a very nice site which contains similar material - http://sdp45.blogspot.com/.

The stories posted here are shown exactly as they were originally published. The "Looking Back" index pages give a complete listing of all the stories, over 14,000 titled news stories and untitled news items, currently available in the "Looking Back" and "G.N.P. News" sections of this site, along with links to the individual stories.

The material contained in the above metioned sections of this site provides a reflection of life in another century, and a type of work, on a job, that has passed into history.
